Brandy - B7 Review: The Vocal Bible Still Killing It 25 Years After Her Debut
Brandy's new album titled B7 had been released on July 31, 2020 which is her very first album since her last album Two Eleven released in 2012. This is Brandy's seventh studio album in total and the seven contributes to that and how it completes a whole week. In addition, this is Brandy's first album release as an independent artist under her own record label Brand Nu, Inc. in partnership with eOne. The album itself was phenomenal and we got to see a whole other side of Brandy. Brandy Norwood even co-wrote every song on the album and it shows that Brandy didn't come back to play, but she came back to slay.
B7 is a different yet familiar album for Brandy as she stays true to her R&B roots but this time around co-wrote every single song on the record. Brandy opens up about her depression from love, heartache and other very emotional things that had went on during her eight year hiatus from music. I really loved how she was able to show it all on the record and it really showed that she wanted this album to be really special.
The first single from the album was "Baby Mama" ft. Chance The Rapper. This song is a total bop and I definitely recommend that you listen to that single first. The song is about getting rid of the bad stigma of the word "baby mama" and to give all the baby mamas lots of love as they are doing everything they can to give their children the world. Chance was a really good addition to this song as he is a family guy himself. Brandy has a daughter and is raising her by herself so the song is a special one to Norwood. Brandy's daughter also sings background on the track which I thought was excellent. The second single off the album was "Borderline" which is my personal favorite from the record. "Borderline" is about a bad relationship that is hard to get over and Brandy's vocals in this track really brought the A-game in it. The music video also was very emotional and helps people that are dealing with mental illness and has a suicide hotline number at the end of the video which is really sweet.
Overall, this album was fantastic, vocally, lyrically and musically. My favorite tracks on the album were "Borderline," "No Tomorrow," "Say Something" and the last track "Bye BiBipolar."
