Toni Braxton: Spell My Name Review - RNB Queen Slays Again
Hello everyone today I did a review on Toni Braxton's new album Spell My Name. Spell My Name is Braxton's tenth studio album and it released on August 28, 2020. The 52-year-old singer still shows other RNB princesses how the queen does it.
Overall this album was very good for her lyrically. A lot of the songs like "Happy Without Me," "Saturday Night," "Gotta Move On" (ft. H.E.R.) & the bonus track "Nothin'" were all in relation about a break up. The album in general talks about a cheating ex and some of these songs represent that. I really liked the writing for the album because it seemed as if it came right from the heart and Braxton herself co-writes every single track aside from the bonus track.
Musically this album was AMAZING. I am a sucker for R&B and Ms. Braxton stays true to that. In particular she stuck with 90's R&B which is even more of a favorite of mine. Braxton's musical arrangements were all good but my favorite was "O.V.E.R.r." Her arrangement in "Do It" (the solo version) was also very nice and would be a second favorite for that.
Vocally Toni Braxton was SLAYING as always. Braxton for sure is one of my favorite contr-altos just like Brandy. She did have quite a few highlights vocally from the album and she can still belt like her big league competitors like Beyonce, Monica, Brandy, Mariah Carey and her sister Tamar Braxton.
My favorite song overall was "Do It" and it was actually the solo version of the song, though I do like the version with Missy, there was just something more emotional in the solo version that was more fulfilling. I definitely recommend this album for people who are really into 90's R&B and I would say this is one of Toni's best albums to date.
